This tool calculates calendar days (all 7 days of the week). If you need working/business days, subtract weekends manually: roughly 5/7 of the total. For official deadlines, check whether weekends and bank holidays are included or excluded.
There are two common conventions. Exclusive counting (the default here) gives the number of days between two dates. For example, 1 Jan to 3 Jan = 2 days. Inclusive counting includes both start and end: 1 Jan to 3 Jan = 3 days. Legal deadlines usually use exclusive counting.
Contracts often specify notice periods in days or months. '30 days' means 30 calendar days from the date of notice. '1 month' can be ambiguous and generally means the same date in the next month, not 30 days.
When dates span different time zones (e.g. international travel or remote meetings), be careful: a flight departing at 11 PM Monday and arriving at 8 AM Tuesday local time has crossed into a new calendar day despite taking only 9 hours.
Dates in the format YYYY-MM-DD (e.g. 2024-03-15) are the international standard (ISO 8601). They sort correctly alphabetically and avoid the DD/MM vs MM/DD ambiguity common in the US and UK.
Date difference is useful for project planning. Knowing there are 47 days until a deadline helps you break work into weekly milestones. Divide the total days by 7 for weeks, or set intermediate dates at 25%, 50%, 75% of the way through.

Britain did not adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1752, by which point it was 11 days behind the rest of Europe. To correct the drift, 11 days were simply removed — 2 September 1752 was followed immediately by 14 September. This caused widespread confusion and, according to some accounts, riots by people who believed 11 days had been stolen from their lives.
The day count represents the elapsed time between the two dates, so it normally counts the difference rather than counting both calendar labels as full days. If you are counting an inclusive period, such as a booking or a notice period, add one day when both the start and end dates should be included.
Calendar months do not all have the same length, and years can contain a leap day. The calculator reports calendar-based years, months, and days separately from the total elapsed days, so the parts describe the path between the dates rather than multiplying a fixed month length.
The calculator can describe the same interval regardless of which date you enter first, but the direction may affect whether the result is shown as before or after. Check the labels before using the answer in a legal, billing, or contractual context, where an inclusive rule or a specific time zone may apply.
This calculation is based on the calendar dates entered, not an appointment’s exact hours and minutes. If a deadline spans time zones or partial days, calculate the timestamps with the relevant local zone as well. Confirm the governing counting rule before using the result for billing, age limits, or contracts.
